PSP VintageMeter (free plug-in for VST, MAS and DirectX hosts) provides professional VU and PPM metering for mono and stereo tracks. All in all it might not be of much practical use as common reference levels are now usualy exceeded for digital recordings and contemporary mastering to get tracks as HOT as possible (max loudness on the Cd without going over 0dBu to nasty digital clipping) - But anyways, it's a nice free unit if you want to compare some VU/PPM needle style metering against your host s/w meters & art least you can tweak it up to be faster. However, the back panel of the Vintage-Meter can be selected to adjust response times & to alter the usual 0dBu at -XX dBFS ref' setting. You can switch this plugin to work in quasi PPM mode (peak mode) too which reacts faster, but neither will work fast enuff really for showing absolute fast peaks that'd tip a dig' recording over 0dbu into dig distortion. It can be switched to do VU (Volume Unit) which kinda gives an overall average rms, (root mean square) metering like how an RMS compressor 'listens' to sound thru it's sidechain, VU meters show an average level but don't capture really fast transient peaks.
